Ever since I was a young girl I have always wanted to be a teacher. I remember playing "school" and making my sister and cousins participate as my students even when they didn't want to...I guess I was a strict teacher as a kid you could say.
As I grew older my career choices differed from an art teacher to an ELL teacher, yet they've all been in the education field. Now at the age of 22, I want to go into teaching for the purpose of making a difference in the life of students regardless of cultural, social, or economic background(s). I enjoy being in the presence of students and learn more about myself through them.
I've had the opportunity to be in a variety of classrooms ranging from Blue-Ribbon schools, Title I schools, as well as high ELL populations within schools. All of these schools have provided a unique insight and a true learning experience.
I've also had the chance to tutor in and out of schools. I've mainly worked with students that either have a language barrier or need additional scaffolding in a particular subject. Being bilingual has helped a lot when it came to Spanish-speaking students that needed additional help learning English. I have also worked with Korean students who I learned a couple of language skills from too. Tutoring has really taught me the importance of differentiation for each child. There have been times where we would need to go to plan C and D because plans A and B failed. Knowing the levels of each each and how to accommodate instruction to their needs is a big skill I have worked on through the use of tutoring.
On the side, I also dedicate my time to volunteering primarily in Madison County and Huntsville City schools as well as outside of the states. I've had the chance to work as a camp intern for Camp Inventions where children explored and solved real-world problems through STEM-focused activities that served to enrich engineering, science, technology, and math concepts for students. I've also had the opportunity to help out at local schools in Puerto Rico as well as San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Stepping into a different cultural aspect has helped to expand my multicultural knowledge and provided an insight of the education system outside of the states.
Having all of these rich experiences has provided me with a much deeper respect for the education of students in different areas. That leaves me with my main goal for teaching: I not only want to educate young minds, but give students the resources and tools they need in order to expand their minds to make a difference in the world whether it be small or large. I truly believe in the the abilities of each child and want to prepare them to be career or college ready.
